In honor of World Redhead Day, Robin shares a heartfelt (and hair-tinted) memory.

May 26 is World Redhead Day, and here at Sensationally Silver, we’re celebrating in a special way — with a personal story from our founder, Robin Norwood.

For many of us, hair is more than just hair — it’s identity, self-expression, and often, the source of our most memorable beauty experiments (and mishaps). Robin’s story captures all of that and more.

A Redhead at Heart

When I was growing up I wished I had  been born with red hair rather than my unremarkable shade of brown. Red hair was beautiful, unusual and attracted attention. I thought it was wonderful to be a redhead.

I dated as many redheaded fellows as I could because I hoped for red-haired children. That didn’t work out, nor did using, in my thirties, a shampoo-in red tint that caused my complexion to take on a horrible orange cast. Plus, a favorite white jacket was ruined when I was caught out in the rain. My wet, temporarily-tinted hair dripped permanent pink blotches all over that beloved jacket’s shoulders. Both sad and embarrassing!

So I learned that red hair works best if you’re born with it. Most of us aren’t. To all of you glorious natural redheads out there, know that you’re not only celebrated today, but envied as well.

Learning to Love What’s Yours

World Redhead Day is the perfect time to reflect on the ways we’ve all longed to be different — and how healing it can be to embrace who we already are.

For me, it meant letting go of the dream of being a redhead and learning to love the hair I do have — especially now that it’s naturally silver. That silver tells a story of strength, experience, and authenticity.

So today, I celebrate you natural redheads — your hair is not only noticed, but envied. And to everyone else: you are beautiful, exactly as you are.
